What Is a Retainer?
An orthodontic retainer is a custom-made dental appliance that holds your teeth in their corrected positions after braces or clear aligners. It prevents teeth from drifting back toward their original alignment — a natural process called relapse.

Understanding Why Retainers Are Essential
Once your braces or clear aligners are removed, your teeth need time to stabilize in their new positions. The bone and soft tissue surrounding your teeth adapt to the changes made during treatment over months. Without a retainer, your teeth will naturally attempt to shift back toward their original positions—a process called relapse.
Retainers hold your teeth in place while the surrounding bone remodels and strengthens. Even after initial stabilization, your teeth remain susceptible to shifting throughout life due to natural aging, changes in jaw growth, and daily forces from chewing and speaking. This is why we recommend lifelong retention to preserve your orthodontic results.

Relapse isn’t a rare complication — it’s what happens by default when retention stops. Orthodontists measure it with Little’s Irregularity Index (LII): the total millimeters your front teeth have drifted out of line. Under 3.5 mm is considered clinically acceptable.

Types of Retainers We Offer

Clear (Essix) Retainers
Clear retainers, also called Essix retainers, are transparent trays custom-molded to fit snugly over your teeth. Made from durable, BPA-free plastic, they are virtually invisible and easy to remove for eating and cleaning.
Hawley Retainers
Hawley retainers combine a custom acrylic base with a thin metal wire that holds your teeth in place. They are highly durable, adjustable, and often last longer than clear retainers with proper care.
Permanent (Fixed) Retainers
Permanent retainers, also called fixed or bonded retainers, are a thin wire bonded behind your teeth. They work around the clock with no effort on your part, making them ideal for patients who prefer a no-maintenance option.
What to Expect
Your retention phase begins immediately after your braces are removed or you complete clear aligner treatment. Dr. Becker will take precise impressions or digital scans to create custom retainers that fit perfectly. We ensure your retainers are ready before your braces come off, so there’s no gap in retention.
During your final appointment, we’ll carefully fit your retainers and provide detailed instructions on proper wear and care. Initially, most patients wear retainers full-time (except when eating or brushing) for several months. After the initial stabilization period, many patients transition to nighttime-only wear. Dr. Becker will create a personalized retention plan tailored to your situation.
